A bug that may cause data to be erased was recently discovered amongst Buffalo NAS products that support the OneDrive Sync function. When renaming or moving folders on OneDrive, files within the folder may be erased from both the Buffalo NAS device and OneDrive if the following conditions are met: • OneDrive Sync is enabled. • The sync mode has been set to bidirectional. • The sync period has been set to either 1, 5, or 10 minutes.
As of this announcement, we recommend not renaming or moving folders on OneDrive to avoid triggering the bug. Alternatively, you can change the sync period to 15 minutes before renaming or moving any folders on OneDrive. If you do, files within any renamed or moved folders will be erased from the Buffalo device only, but these files can be recovered by resetting a job (for TeraStations) or recreating a job (for LinkStations).
Buffalo plans to release a permanent fix for this bug in February of 2023. In the interim, we recommend continuing to update your product firmware to the latest version for security reasons.
Deleted files will be saved in the OneDrive recycle bin for a short period*. Refer to the Microsoft Support page on how to restore deleted files from the OneDrive recycle bin. *Files in the recycle bin will be kept for 30 days for a personal account, and 93 days for a business account.
