How Buffalo’s Real-Time Threat Detection Can Help Proactively Mitigate Cyber Threats

Dec 04, 2025

Traditional cybersecurity measures—like firewalls, antivirus software, and encryption—play a crucial role in protecting systems, but they often operate reactively, responding to threats after they’ve occurred. To truly safeguard your organization, a more proactive approach is essential. That's why Buffalo developed the new real-time threat detection feature, now available on our TeraStation 5020, 3030, and 7010 series network storage, to help you stay one step ahead of ransomware.

What Is Real-Time Threat Detection?

This Buffalo NAS feature identifies anomalies in file behavior that could indicate malicious activity, such as unexpected changes in the sizes, count, and extensions of files in a shared folder. Such activities may indicate the presence of malware, ransomware, or unauthorized access by a cybercriminal. By alerting you of potential threats before they escalate, abnormal file activity detection helps mitigate cyber risks more effectively.

This feature monitors shared folders at set intervals for abnormal file activity that could signal a potential ransomware or malware threat as indicated by:
•    Changes beyond a pre-configured threshold to the total number of files in the folder (Not available on TS3030 series)
•    Changes beyond a pre-configured threshold to the total size of all files in the folder (Not available on TS3030 series)
•    Changes to the extension of any file in the folder, such as ransomware-specific extension

The Benefits of Real-Time Threat Detection

Early Detection of Threats

One of the most significant advantages of real-time threat detection is its ability to identify threats before they take you past the point of no return. Traditional defenses may miss sophisticated attacks that exploit unknown vulnerabilities or involve insider threats. Abnormal file activity, however, can reveal subtle signs of an attack in progress. By catching these signs early, you can take action before serious damage is done.

Protection Against Ransomware

Ransomware is one of the most devastating types of cyberattacks. It encrypts critical files, making them inaccessible until a ransom is paid to the attacker. Ransomware often works by systematically modifying or locking large numbers of files in a short time frame. Real-time threat detection based on unusual activity can quickly identify these mass modifications and alert security teams to the ransomware attack as it unfolds. This allows for immediate action, such as isolating infected systems and stopping the spread of the ransomware.

Enhanced Insider Threat Detection

Insider threats—where a company’s own employees or trusted partners intentionally or unintentionally cause harm—are notoriously difficult to detect. Employees often have access to sensitive files, making it hard to distinguish between legitimate and malicious behavior. Coupled with Buffalo's free Remote Management System, you are able to receive notifications of abnomal file activity \ and potentially flagging suspicious actions like copying large amounts of data or accessing files outside of normal business hours.

Increased Compliance and Risk Management

Many industries, such as healthcare and finance, are subject to strict regulations regarding data privacy and security. Failing to protect sensitive data can result in legal penalties and loss of customer trust. By implementing abnormal file activity detection, organizations can better protect critical data and ensure compliance with industry standards.

The Most Secure NAS

Real-time threat detection is a powerful tool in the fight against cyberthreats. By identifying anomalous behavior before it escalates, this new feature helps your organization proactively mitigate risks more effectively. From detecting ransomware to catching insider threats, the benefits are clear. It’s not just a matter of compliance or prevention—it’s about protecting the future of your business.
