Buffalo’s Guide to Downloading All Albums Using Google Takeout

Starting June 1, 2021, users will need to pay to use Google Photos once the free 15GB storage cap is exceeded. If you want to avoid the hassle of monthly fees, Buffalo recommends moving your data to external storage for simple management and security. You can follow the guide below to move your data off of Google storage and onto your local external storage.

Downloading All Albums Using Google Takeout

While you can download each album individually from Google Photos, Google offers a batch download tool called Google Takeout that is intended to let you easily download all the data held in your Google Account all at once, and you can sort and arrange your photos once you move them to any external storage you use.

  1. Go to your Google Photos page and make sure you are logged in.
  2. Click the Settings icon.
  3. Scroll down until you see the “Export your data” option. Open it and then click “Backup”.

  4. You will be taken to the Google Takeout page.

  5. Click “All photo albums included” and choose which albums you would like to download. If you would like to download all your albums at once, leave every album selected.

  6. Click “Next step”.

  7. The next page will present you with a variety of download options. You can have Google create a download link and email it to you. Or, if you have a Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox, or Box account, you can link the account to Google Photos and have your files uploaded to your other cloud account. You can also choose the type of compressed file to be downloaded (ZIP or TGZ file), as well as how large the exported files will be. For example, if your data will be larger than 2GB, you can have your data broken up into multiple zipped files.

  8. Click “Create export”.

  9. Once the zipped file(s) are downloaded, move them to your external storage from your computer.

Note: Once you download all your Google data, it is not deleted from your Google Account. Once you have finished downloading all your data, delete it from your Google Account to save space.
