Press Releases
(Updated 12.6.2021) Recently, Western Digital has reported that some hard drives may have shipped using Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) technology in certain product lines, including the NAS-Specific WD Red drives, without being readily apparent to consumers.
Buffalo would like to assure our partners and customers that the NAS-grade hard drives included in our products, even ones that contain WD Red NAS drives, all use Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR) technology instead of SMR. This includes the enterprise-grade hard drives found in our TS51210RH products. Therefore, RAID array issues associated with SMR technology will not occur on our products that contain NAS-grade or enterprise-grade hard drives. Buffalo is committed to the highest level of quality for the hard drives in our NAS products. We carefully select our drives and test them rigorously before adding them to the product chassis. If you would like more clarity on our devices that do come with non-NAS grade SMR Hard Drives, please contact us here.
