How to Configure Amazon S3 Sync (Cloud Storage Gen 2) on a TeraStation

Last Updated: 11/04/2026

Overview

The TeraStation can sync files between a shared folder and Amazon S3 or a compatible cloud storage service that uses the S3 API, such as Wasabi Cloud Storage. This article explains how to create a Cloud Storage Gen 2 sync job using Amazon S3.

Cloud Storage Gen 2 is available on supported TeraStations (TS5020/3030 series running firmware version 3.16 or later). Unlike Gen 1, which uploads files through a linked folder using a backup process, Gen 2 syncs files directly between a TeraStation folder and a cloud storage bucket. It also offers scheduling, transfer speed limits, and file filters.

Before You Begin

  • Make sure your TeraStation supports Cloud Storage Gen 2 (TS5020/3030 series running firmware version 3.16 or later).
  • Create an Amazon S3 account and a bucket before setting up the sync job.
  • Have the bucket name, region, access key, and secret access key ready.
  • Identify the TeraStation folder you want to use for the job.

Notes:

  • Depending on the services purchased, charges may vary based on the operations performed and the amount of data stored or transferred. To avoid being charged unexpectedly expensive fees, we recommend staying aware of the price structure for data storage and operations and regularly checking how much have been charged.
  • Set the TeraStation’s time settings to the correct time. Using NTP is recommended. To configure NTP settings on the TeraStation, refer to the “Name, Date, Time, and Language” section in User Manual chapter 11.
  • If syncing with Amazon S3 through a proxy server, click Proxy Server and select whether to use the configured settings or configure another proxy server. This function is only available if using a proxy server with the HTTP protocol. If a proxy server with the HTTPS protocol has already been configured, or if using another proxy server, select “Custom settings” and enter the proxy server address (which is the HTTP protocol), port number, username, and password. Consult your network administrator for detailed proxy server settings.
  • This function doesn’t support Amazon S3 Glacier or S3 Object Lock.

Note: Your S3 bucket may not be ready to use immediately after creating a bucket. In such a case, wait for a while and try again. It could take up to 24 hours after the bucket is created for job creation to be possible.

Create an Amazon S3 Sync Job

1. Enable Cloud Storage Gen 2

Log in to the TeraStation's web-based Settings and open Cloud Storage. Turn on Sync with Amazon S3 and Compatible Storage (Cloud Storage Gen 2), then click the settings icon to its right.

2. Start a New Job

In the Sync Job List for S3 window, click Create to open the setup wizard.

3. Enter a Job Name

Enter a name for the sync job. This example uses s3. Click Next.

4. Choose the Sync Action

Select the direction in which you want to sync files. For this example, select Upload to sync files from the TeraStation to Amazon S3, and leave the storage class set to Standard. Click Next.

Important: There are two types of sync actions: uploading and downloading. If uploading is selected as the sync action, only files on Amazon S3 will be updated. If downloading is selected as the sync action, only files on the TeraStation will be updated. Both uploading and downloading will delete files from the sync destination folder that don’t already exist in the source folder.

Storage class: S3 Standard is the default Amazon S3 storage class and is designed for frequently accessed data. If you do not specify a storage class, S3 Standard is used. On the other hand, RRS is a legacy storage class designed for noncritical data with lower durability than S3 Standard. Amazon recommends using S3 Standard instead of RRS.

5. Select the TeraStation Folder

On the Configure Folder Pairs screen, click Browse.

Select the folder you want to sync, then click OK. To create an empty folder instead, click Create Folder in the folder selection window.

Confirm that the selected folder appears next to Folder on TeraStation, then click Next.

Note: Do not select a shared folder that is currently being used by certain TeraStation functions, such as cloud storage sync jobs, including existing Amazon S3 sync jobs.

Note: The sixth level and deeper of shared folders cannot be selected.

6. Enter the Amazon S3 Connection Information

Select Amazon S3 for Service Name and choose the region that matches your bucket. Enter the bucket name, access key, and secret access key. Check the region code and regional endpoint shown on the screen, then click Next.

7. Set the Sync Method

Specify the sync method and click Next. If you have selected “Sync using configured time settings” for the sync method, skip to step 9.

Note: If “Sync at specified recurring intervals” is selected, the sync process will start running at the beginning of every hour and at every time interval you set. For example, if “15-minute mark” is selected, the sync process will begin as soon as the hour starts, followed by every 15-, 30-, and 45-minute mark of the hour.

8. Set the Sync Frequency

Configure the sync frequency. Files will be synced during the start and end times of the interval configured in step 9 above. If you want to always sync files during the configured sync interval, select “Always sync within the specified interval” for “Frequency”. After making the desired selections, click Next.

9. Configure the Consistency Check

Select whether to check file consistency. If a discrepancy is found between the files on the TeraStation and Amazon S3, that file will be updated to the latest version. After making the desired selection, click Next.

10. Configure the Transfer Speed Limit

To cap the sync job's transfer speed, select Enable and enter the maximum speed. This example leaves the option set to Disable. Click Next.

11. Configure File Size and Hidden File Filters

Choose whether to exclude files by size or hidden status. In this example, leave both Filter by File Size and Filter Hidden Files set to Disable, then click Next.

Note: The file size filter applies only to uploads. The maximum file size that can be specified is 15,360 MB (15 GB). “Hidden files” refers to files whose filenames begin with a period.

12. Configure the File Extension Filter

To exclude files with specific extensions, enable Filter by File Extension and use Add to enter the extensions you want to exclude. This example leaves the filter set to Disable. Click Next.

13. Review and Save the Job

Review the settings, including the sync action, TeraStation folder, destination bucket, schedule, and optional filters. Scroll down to check any remaining settings. If you need to change an option, click Back. When everything is correct, click OK to create the job.

14. Setup Confirmation

15. Job List

The new job appears in the Sync Job List for S3. This confirms that the job has been created.

Additional Notes

  • If the network speed is 50 Mbps or slower, larger file uploads may fail.
  • If any of the following operations are performed during the sync process, syncing will stop and the I64 message notification will appear: deleting files, moving files, or renaming files. The I64 message notification disappears during the next sync process.
  • Empty folders on the TeraStation will not be uploaded to Amazon S3.
  • If the same files are stored in both a shared folder on the TeraStation and the bucket, and the files in the bucket were not uploaded using this feature, the files may be uploaded again during the initial sync process. If Versioning is enabled on Amazon S3, the identical files will be saved as different versions.
