How to Set Up Email Notifications Using Microsoft 365 OAuth 2.0 on Buffalo NAS

To maintain a secure connection with Microsoft 365 (M365), Buffalo NAS units utilize OAuth 2.0 for email notifications. This modern authentication method replaces the legacy use of passwords (Basic Authentication).

Note:
Microsoft disables the SMTP protocol by default for most tenants to improve security. Even when using OAuth 2.0, you must explicitly permit the mailbox to use the SMTP service.

  1. Access the TeraStation's web user interface, by entering the current IP address of the unit into a web browser. If the current IP is unknown the unit can be located using NAS Navigator. If NAS Navigator is not installed you can download the latest version by going to the downloads page for the TeraStation on the Buffalo website.

  2. Click on the “Management” tab on the left side of the GUI. If the slider next to “Email Notification” is greyed out, click to turn it on. Once it is on (blue) click the icon to the right to configure the options.

  3. This page shows the current settings. By default this page is empty. Click the “Edit” button on the lower right to configure the email options.

  4. Select OAuth 2.0 from the "Authentication type" drop-down to setup email notifications using Microsoft 365 OAuth 2.0.

Then enter the sender’s email address (this will be the “from” field in the email)
Click the “Add” button to designate recipients for the email notifications. Click the “OK” button to finish.

  5. A prompt will appear asking to proceed to OAuth 2.0 authentication. Click OK.

  6. A new window will display a URL and an Access Authorization Code.
    Click the link provided: https://microsoft.com/devicelogin

  7. On the Microsoft "Enter code" page, Paste the authorization code you copied from the TeraStation UI. Click Next.

  8. Enter the Email Address of which you want to send the email notification from.
Follow the prompts to enter your password and complete any MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) requirements.

You may see a permission request for "Buffalo Email OAuth Service"—confirm/accept to allow the NAS to send emails on your behalf.

  9. Once the Microsoft side says "You have signed in to the Buffalo Email OAuth Service application," return to the NAS web interface.

A note will appear stating that a test email will be sent once authentication is complete. Click OK.

  10. From the Email Notification Settings screen.
Ensure the OAuth 2.0 Auth Status now displays as Authenticated.

Click Send Test Email at the bottom left to ensure the handshake was successful and the email arrives in your inbox.
