Increasing File Access Speeds Using SSD Caching

Last Updated: 02/09/2026

Applies to TeraStation 7010
TeraStation 51220 Firmware version 1.68 or later

SSD caching will increase the read and write speeds for files.

Notes:
• To use SSD caching, an SSD expansion card (sold separately) should be installed. Refer to the User Manual “Installing an Expansion Card” section and install the SSD card first.
• The following operations will not be available for a drive or RAID array as part of an LVM volume that is being used to create an SSD cache:
Checking drives, formatting drives, dismounting drives, redetecting drives, changing RAID settings, configuring a hot spare, disabling LVM, expanding iSCSI and LVM volume capacity
• Once an SSD cache has been created on one RAID array, it cannot be used on another RAID array.

Creating an SSD Cache
To create an SSD cache, follow the procedure below.
1. Create an LVM volume first by referring to the “Limits for LVM Volumes” section in the user manual.
2. From WEBUI Settings, click Storage.

3. Click the settings icon to the right of “SSD Caching”.

4. Select the volume to create the SSD cache and click Create.  SSD caches can be created on NAS and iSCSI volumes.

5. Enter the desired cache size to assign for the SSD cache and select the cache mode, then click OK.

Note: The details of the cache modes are as below:
• Write-through: Data will be written to both the SSD for caching and the drive during write operations. This creates redundancy to increase data protection, and will have no effect on write speed.
• Write-back: Data will be first written to the SSD cache, and then is sent to the drive for storage. The write speed will be increased, but since data is only cached on the SSD, it will be lost if a cache failure occurs (such as due to a SSD drive error).

6. The “Confirm Operation” screen will open. Enter the confirmation number, then click OK.

7. The process is complete when the status of the LVM volume you created is displayed as “Created”.

Deleting an SSD Cache

To delete an SSD cache, follow the procedure below.
1. From WEBUI Settings, click Storage.

2. Click the settings icon to the right of “SSD Caching”.

3. Select the volume that includes the SSD cache to be deleted and click Delete.

4. The “Confirm Operation” screen will open. Enter the confirmation number, then click OK.

Note: Do not turn off the TeraStation while deleting the cache. It will take from few minutes to few hours to complete the deletion.

5. The deletion process will be performed in the background. The process is complete when the status of the LVM volume you deleted is displayed as “Not created”.

Note:
Write-back cache data will be offloaded upon normal deletion process.

Warning/Caution:
If the normal delete operation fails, before using the Force Delete option, make sure you have a backup of any data from the attached storage. The force delete operation may cause attached storage corruption.
