Learn more about how Snapshot can help protect your data from ransomware here.
System Requirements • Buffalo TS6000/5020/7010 series NAS • ESXi host has connected to TS6000/5020/7010 iSCSI volume as datastore. Virtual Machine is located on this datastore. • Buffalo Snapshot Agent It is recommended to read this KB article first on how to setup the Snapshot-Agent and how the Snapshot-Agent works with the ESXi server.
IMPORTANT: Make sure to understand how to manage duplicate VMFS Datastores, since the restored iSCSI volume will be identical with the original volume. Managing Duplicate VMFS Datastores
Keep Existing Datastore Signature
Resignature a VMFS Datastore Copy
• Make sure vCenter/ESXi Server is registered to the Snapshot-Agent. iSCSI volumes and virtual machines that are managed by the vCenter/ESXi Server will be displayed on the Snapshot-agent. Make sure the Availability of the iSCSI volume is showing as “Normal”.
Note: When the Snapshot agent was not setup properly to work with the virtual machine, the virtual machine will only be snapshotted/backed-up in Crash-Consistent state.
• Backup the iSCSI volume on datastore TS6000 to the backup target TS6000 Please follow the Backup section of this article. After the backup completed successfully, you should see the Snapshot Result as “Success” with the Last Run time from the Snapshot-Agent.
Make sure to check the “Backup all Snapshots” option when configuring the Backup task.
From the iSCSI volume’s snapshot list of the datastore TS6000, you can see an Application-consistent snapshot that was taken by the Backup task.
• Restore the iSCSI volume from the backup TS6000 to the datastore TS6000 It is recommended to create another File I/O iSCSI volume for restoration instead of overwriting the original volume. Please follow the Restore section of this article. Make sure to check the “Backup all Snapshots” option when configuring the Restore task.
• Restore the application-consistent snapshot on the Restored iSCSI volume At the datastore TeraStation TS6000, navigate to the restored iSCSI volume’s snapshot list. Select the Application-Consistent snapshot that you want to restore, then click Restore button on the top.
After the restore completed successfully, you will now have another copy of iSCSI VMFS datastore which the state is when the backup happens.
• Mount the restoration iSCSI Datastore to the ESXi host.
1. From the ESXi host where the virtual machine will be located, select Configure -> Storage Adapters. -Select the “iSCSI iSCSI Software Adapter” -Click “Rescan Adapter” and wait until process finish. -Then click “Rescan Storage…” and wait until process finish.
2. Unmount the original VMFS datastore that has the same UUID as the copy you plan to mount. You can mount the VMFS datastore copy only if it does not collide with the original VMFS datastore.
3. Navigate to the Datastore tab, click Actions on the top. Select Storage -> New Datastore.
4. Select VMFS as the datastore type.
5. From the list of storage devices, select the restored iSCSI volume device. The device should have a specific value displayed in the Snapshot Volume column, which indicates that the device is a copy that contains a copy of an existing VMFS datastore.
6. Under Mount Options, select whether to Assign New or Keep Existing Signature. Please refer to this article Managing Duplicate VMFS Datastores
Review the datastore configuration information and click Finish. Now the VMFS datastore is mounted using the restored iSCSI volume.
• Revert the Virtual Machine snapshot created by the Snapshot-Agent on vCenter/ESXi host 1. Navigate to the Virtual Machine file folder inside the restored iSCSI volume datastore from the vCenter/ESXi Datastore explorer. Re-register the virtual machine back to the inventory.
2. Navigate to the re-registered virtual machine from the virtual machine inventory. Click on Snapshots -> Manage Snapshots 3. Select the snapshot that was taken by the Buffalo Snapshot Agent, click “Revert to”
4. Click OK to confirm. The virtual machine should now be reverted to the state when the TS6000 iSCSI backup was performed.
