Adding New Drives and Expanding the RAID on a Partially Populated TeraStation

Last Updated: 08/01/2025

Applies to all partially populated TeraStations. Example is a TeraStation 51210 series.

NOTE: It is recommended to back up all data on the TeraStation before beginning this operation.

NOTE: New drives must be at least the same capacity as existing drives (or larger) in order to be added to the existing RAID array.

  1. After physically adding the new drive(s) to the TeraStation, open the user interface, go to the “Storage” tab and click the widget next to “Drives”.
  2. Select the new drive(s) and click the “Format Drive” button. Multiple drives may need to be formatted individually.
  3. Leave the format type as “XFS”. If the drives in the existing array are encrypted, check the “Encryption” option. Click the “Format” button to begin formatting.
  4. Enter the four digit code given in the box and click “OK”.
  5. Formatting time will vary based on the drive size.
  6. When complete click “OK”. If not clicked this dialog box may close automatically after a few seconds.
  7. The status of the new drive(s) should be “Normal”. Click the “Close” button to continue.
  8. Still on the “Storage” tab, click the widget next to “RAID”.
  9. Select the array that you want to add the new drive(s) to.
  10. Select the drive(s) to be added. Multiple drives can be added simultaneously. When all the new drives are selected click the “Change RAID Array” button.
  11. Enter the four digit code given in the box and click “OK”.
  12. The RMM (RAID Mode Manager) will begin the array expansion.
  13. When the initial function is completed click “OK”.
  14. The approximate time remaining to complete the expansion will be shown on the RAID properties. The TeraStation can be used during this operation but the additional space will not be available until the operation is complete.
