Replacing a failed drive in an LS520D

Last Updated: 10/14/2024

Note:

  • Do not press hard on the top of the LinkStation.
  • Pull the drive straight out the front of the chassis.
  1. Turn the LinkStation off and remove all cables.
  2. Squeeze the left side of the front panel and swing it open.
  3. Pull the failed drive's carrier straight out from the center and remove it from the LinkStation.
  4. Remove the drive from the carrier.
  5. Install a new drive in the carrier.
  6. Replace the four screws.
  7. Insert the new drive into the empty slot.
  8. Close the front panel.
  9. Connect all cables and turn on the LinkStation.

Depending on your RAID mode, the rebuilding procedure will be different. Follow the corresponding procedure below that matches your RAID mode.

Using RAID 1

  1. Hold down the function button (Item 5 below) on the back of the LinkStation for 5 seconds.
  2. The LinkStation will start rebuilding the RAID array. After a few minutes, the I18 message will be displayed in NAS Navigator2. Wait until the drive finishes rebuilding; the I18 message will be extinguished.

Using RAID 0 or Linear

NOTE: If you were using RAID 0 or Linear and a hard drive failed, all data was lost. Data will need to be restored from backup after replacing the drive and re-creating the array.

  1. Open the LinkStation GUI and click on the disk manager icon in the quick launch panel.
  2. The error message below will be displayed due to a new drive being inserted. Click “OK”.
  3. Click the RAID tab, then “Create RAID Array”.
  4. Select a RAID mode and click “Next”. It is recommended to use RAID 1 to prevent future data loss in the event of another drive failure.
  5. Click “Yes”.
  6. RAID array creation will start. Wait until it's done. When it's finished, click “OK” and then click “Close”.

Once the RAID array is configured, create shared folders on the array to use them.

Using JBOD
If the drive that was initially formatted fails, the LinkStation will not be accessible unless the drive is replaced.

  1. Open the LinkStation GUI and click on the disk manager icon in the quick launch panel.
  2. The error message below will be displayed due to a new drive being inserted. Click “OK”.
  3. Select a drive that shows "Unformatted" and click “Format”.
  4. Select a file system from the drop-down list and click “Format”.
  5. When the format is finished click “OK” and then click “Close”.

Once the drive is formatted, create shared folders on the drive to use them.
