Configuring a VPN Server for a Buffalo AirStation

Last Updated: 10/14/2024

To establish a secure, remote connection, you can set up a VPN (Virtual Private Network) server. This serves as a remote and secure connection to another network. A VPN can be created from multiple VPN protocols. The AirStation supports PPTP and L2TP/IPsec.

  1. Connect the AirStation to a computer with an Ethernet cable and power both devices on.
  2. Launch a web browser and enter the AirStation's IP address into the address bar. If you do not know the AirStation's IP address, check the setup card included in your AirStation's package, or use AirStation Configuration Tool to display it.
  3. Log in to Settings. The default username is "admin" and the default password is "password".

  5. Click on the "Internet" tab on the left, then click on the "VPN Server" subtab.

  6. Select either L2TP/IPsec or PPTP for the VPN server. PPTP is a very basic VPN protocol that offers very basic encryption, but offsets it with better speed. L2TP/IPsec offers better encryption for additional security, but it is slower and requires more CPU processing. If you select "Disabled", the feature will not be available.

  7. Enter the pre-shared key for the L2TP/IPsec connection. If using PPTP, select an authentication method. We recommend using MS-CHAPv2 authentication with 40-bit/128-bit password.

  8. Enter the server's IP address.

  9. You can leave the client IP address on Auto. If client computers are within a specific IP address range and you know what it is, click Manual and enter the address range into the field.

  10. Enter the DNS server's IP address. If you don't have a specific DNS server, you can leave it on the AirStation's default LAN-side IP address. You can also use either a dynamic DNS hostname or a static IP address for this field.

  11. If you have a WINS (Windows Internet Name Service) server on the network, you can enter its IP address into the field. If you do not have one or do not know what it is, you can leave this field blank.

  12. Leave the MTU (maximum transmission unit) value on its default setting.
  13. Once the VPN server is established, you can create and edit users that can access the VPN server. Click Edit Users to open the Edit Users page.

  14. Enter a username and password for a new user.
