Unable to Map a Share by Hostname in Windows

Last Updated: 10/15/2024

This guide is only for when after setting up a TeraStation or LinkStation on your network and attempting to map a share using the UNC, such as \\terastation\share, you are not able to map the share. You are able to map the same share by IP address, such as \\192.168.245.245\share.

  1. Open Windows Explorer and select "Network".

  2. Verify that the NAS is listed as a "Media Device" instead of a "Computer".

  3. If the NAS is indeed listed as a "Media Device", open the device manager and expand "Network adapters".

  4. Right-click on the network adapter you are using to connect to the local network and select "Uninstall".

  5. Make absolutely certain that the check box for "Delete the driver software for this device" is NOT checked and click OK.

  6. Right-click on the hostname at the top of the device manager and click Scan for hardware changes.

  7. At this point the driver for the NIC should automatically reinstall and the NAS should be seen normally when browsing the network. You should also be able to map to a share using the UNC path. If this does not work contact your local domain administrator or Microsoft for additional assistance.
